About Me

I have over 20 years of teaching experience, including the past 12 years focused on private tutoring in Vancouver and online. My background includes teaching in Europe and South America, and I specialize in English, French, and Social Studies. Many of my young Taiwanese and Chinese students affectionately call me “Teacher Ian,” which inspired the name of my website.

What gives me an edge in language instruction is that I mastered three other languages as an adult — Russian, Armenian, and Spanish. Because I’ve gone through the process myself, I understand what truly works when learning a new language. This makes my teaching both effective and empathetic.

Another strength I bring to teaching is my ability to connect naturally with students of all ages. I’ve spent decades tutoring learners from kindergarten through grade 12—and even university level. As a father of two bright boys, ages 7 and 10, I understand how to engage young minds with patience and encouragement. I also tutor my sons daily, which keeps my teaching approach grounded and practical.

I spent 10 years with one of Vancouver’s largest tutoring companies, which employed over 400 tutors, and was recognized as their top tutor. My sessions, which clients valued at up to $200 per hour, were consistently in high demand because of the strong results my students achieved. I now work independently, offering personalized lessons that help students achieve academic success and confidence.
